Halong Bay – Floating Fishing Village

I have always wondered what it would be like to live on the set of the Waterworld movie and whilst in Halong Bay I got this chance.

It is quite an incredible way to live and with the way the overpopulation of the World is going, this may be the way we will have to live (or we will continue to live in high rise shoebox apartments).

The fishing village houses are floated by empty plastic barrels and are tied off to the Halong Bay islands so they don’t float away.

The village we went to had about 150 residents who were mostly fishermen (surprise), but there was also a school there. The students attend until they are about 11 and then they get out their fishing rods and join the family business.

We were hosted to some tree bark tea and rice wine (which looked like a murky liquid with floating twigs and swollen maggots in it). I politely declined the rice wine but partook in the tree bark tea (tasted like bitter wood).
